I watch absolutely no reality television but I am intrigued by it's impact on society. By watching reality shows do you find that you have more drama in your life due to example or less due to overload? My hypothesis is more but I'd like to hear what my readers have to say...all two of you.
I watch a lot of reality TV because it's like people watching on steroids. I find it entertaining and also educational to learn how other people behave in certain situations. Yes, I know there is a substantial amount of editing and much of the material is not real at all. I like to think, however, that I can see through much of the editing and still get an idea of what makes the individual tick.
Most of what I see are behaviors that I wouldn't want to exhibit while every once in a while somebody does something truly impressive, interesting, or even honorable. No matter what the behavior, I feel like I learn how to be a better person after watching it. As far as drama goes, I think it reduces the daily drama in my life. It's made me realize over and over again that the more level-headed, calm personalities generally garner the most respect. It's also made me realize just how normal and boring of a life I lead which is exactly what I want. Fame would really suck.

That's hard for me to answer because the only "reality tv" I ever watch is The Amazing Race, and that is such high-stress competition that it's inflatable to daily life. I have seen 10 mins of one episode of Real Housewives of NJ and I can proudly state that I have never overturned a table in a restaurant. I also saw one full ep of the White Trash Circus....er um...Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and I can also definitively state that I have never brought a vile if cocaine to my job, our made out with some random black dude.

Reality TV would be different if it were actual reality ... I honestly do not believe that the majority is spur of the moment, off the cuff behavior at all. Society enjoys drama way too much ... I don't want it in my life, so why would I want to watch other people pretending that it is really happening to them on TV?
